Sustainability
Farming the Future, Canning with Care
Sustainability isn’t a department—it’s our DNA.
Reducing Waste
We prevent tomato gluts from becoming food waste by absorbing surplus harvests during peak season.

Our Tree Planting Initiative
“Plant a Can, Grow a Tree” – Reforesting the Future, One Can at a Time
At Upper Foods, sustainability goes beyond the can. Every tomato we process carries a commitment—not just to Ghanaian farmers and consumers—but to the land that makes it all possible.
That’s why we’ve launched the “Plant a Can, Grow a Tree” initiative.
For every 10 cans of tomatoes you buy, we plant a tree in one of our farming communities across the Upper East Region of Ghana—starting right here in Pwalugu, the heart of our tomato journey.
Why Trees?
Tomato farming is vulnerable to climate change, soil degradation, and heat stress. Trees help:
- Restore soil fertility and reduce erosion
- Provide shade for farms and workers
- Absorb CO₂ and improve air quality
- Support long-term community resilience
From Neem to moringa, acacia, teak, and even fruit trees, we’re growing forests that give back—nutritionally, environmentally, and economically.

A Community-Led Green Movement
We’re working hand-in-hand with:
- Youth groups and women’s cooperatives
- Local schools in Pwalugu and Talensi
- Farmer-based organizations across Kassena-Nankana
Together, we plant during the rainy season and track survival rates with community monitors and field partners.
How You Help — Just by Buying a Can
- Every Upper Foods can you purchase fuels this reforestation mission.
- Whether you’re making jollof in Accra or stew in Bolgatanga—your meal is helping a tree take root in Ghana.
- Look out for our “This Can Plants a Tree” label. Scan the QR code to see where your impact is growing.
